Rutherford set to retire

LONDON 2012 gold medallist Greg Rutherford has confirmed he will retire at the end of the season due to persistent injuries. The 31-year-old, who also won world, European and Commonwealth Games long jump titles, has barely competed over the past 18 months because of ankle injuries and those problems are at the root of his decision. He might yet pursue a third straight European crown in Berlin in August, but either way this summer will mark his last on the circuit. Rutherford said: ‘With my ankle it is like having dull toothache all the time. I don’t want to be in pain every single day of my life. ‘However, I would love to win three successive European titles. If I think I can I will go.’
