Spurs back at Wembley for first home game

- By MATT LAWTON Chief Sports Reporter

TOTTENHAM look almost certain to play their first home game of next season at Wembley after striking an agreement in case their new £850million stadium is not finished in time. The Premier League release the 2018-19 fixture list tomorrow, but the venue for Spurs’ home games is set to be listed as ‘TBC’. That comes after Tottenham sought a 48-hour extension — until 6pm on Friday — to confirm whether they would renew their tenancy at Wembley. Sportsmail understands Spurs will be allowed to play their first three Premier League matches away from home, followed by at least one game at Wembley. Tottenham’s £850m project at White Hart Lane is understood to be making rapid progress but deadlines are tight. The new season begins on August 11 and there are three further rounds of games before the first international break. Premier League rules normally dictate a club must complete all of their home games at the same ground — but Spurs have the support of other clubs to switch home after the season has started. The Premier League are keen to support any club looking to upgrade their stadium. UEFA are also flexible about the venue for their opening game of the Champions League, to be played on September 18 or 19. The club have already sold tens of thousands of season tickets for the new stadium, while a number of test events will need to take place for safety reasons. Meanwhile, Toby Alderweireld claimed he could yet stay at Tottenham this summer despite a season on the sidelines under Mauricio Pochettino. Manchester United have kept tabs on the defender but he said: ‘Yeah, why not (stay)? I have two years left on my contract. I don’t know what’s going to happen. It will be different next season.’
