VAR ‘IMPERFECT’, SAYS REFS CHIEF

-

FIFA are warning fans to expect an ‘imperfect’ VAR system when the technology is unleashed at the World Cup this week.

VAR is set to be used for every match in Russia, but despite trials in the English cup competitions and in the German and Italian leagues, concerns remain over the technology’s readiness for the world stage.

FIFA director of refereeing Massimo Busacca admitted yesterday that VAR might not provide the clarity some are craving. ‘If we say now yes to (having VAR in) this World Cup, it’s because we think we are ready,’ he said. ‘But don’t think that it will be perfect. We are looking to have an incredible uniformity and consistency, but don’t think that technology solves the problem 100 per cent.’

Argentinian referee Nestor Pitana will take charge of tomorrow’s opening match between Russia and Saudi Arabia.

A group of 14 Russian girls will act as ballgirls, the first all-female group to do so. The girls, aged 13 to 16, from Agryz, a small town 500 miles east of Moscow, were selected after making a sponsor’s shortlist of ‘inspiring entrants’ to a national junior football tournament.
