OF watching Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland at the wedding, Thomas Markle said: ‘My ex-wife is a beautiful woman. I thought she looked very good. I kind of wish she was sitting with someone. Unfortunately I couldn’t be there but she did very well.’

The former lighting director met her while working on US soap opera General Hospital in Hollywood, but they divorced when Meghan was six.

He said: ‘The unfortunate thing about our job and this industry – you spend most of your time working and not at home. I think that made it a little difficult for Doria and we decided to go our separate ways. But our child was always the most important thing between the two of us. Always.’
