Gut noises linked to IBS diagnosis

-

Listening to gut noises could improve diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome (iBs) — that’s the theory behind new technology from the University of Western Australia.

Researchers presented their work at Digestive Disease Week conference in Washington this month. they have invented a belt with tiny microphones that record ‘ the rumblings and grumblings of the gut’, and software that recognises the distinct sounds the gut makes as the bowel squeezes and relaxes in those with the condition.

in tests on 30 people who wore a prototype while fasting and after a meal, it could identify those previously diagnosed with iBs — it could one day be used to spare patients diagnostic procedures such as colonoscopies.
