tHe letter about a holiday spent in the ‘pub’ (Peterborough) reminds me of our trip to Spain many years ago. on returning to school, the headteacher asked all the children where they’d been over the summer. He got the usual trips to the seaside and visiting grandparents, until my son, then aged eight, put up his hand and announced that we had visited Barcelona and seen a statue of Christopher Columbus. At last, thought the head, a bit of culture! ‘So, Gavin,’ he asked, ‘can you remember what Christopher Columbus is famous for?’ After thinking for a moment, Gavin’s response was: ‘Is he the man who brought Gary Lineker to Barcelona?’ Mrs N.
