HOW ANDY FARED ON COMEBACK...

-

MOVEMENT: The area everyone was looking at and he did not seem to have lost much, despite fatigue late on. His court coverage and footwork were excellent, and he even managed to retrieve some of Kyrgios’s punishing groundstrokes that went low and wide. Very encouraging — if he pulls up OK.

MENTAL FOCUS: Remarkable effort to maintain that intensity over more than two-and-a-half hours after so long out. There was an ‘over my dead body’ feel to the performance that was reassuringly familiar. Saving eight of 11 break points was impressive, given his lack of match sharpness.

SERVE: Eight double faults was high but not surprising in the context of the match. He often found big first serves when needed but managed to win only 40 per cent of second-serve points.

GROUNDSTROKES: Leant nicely on his backhand and the forehand had penetration. Occasionally he pulled the trigger too early and missed but overall the consistency and depth were good.

RETURN: Very sharp reflexes and some excellent blocked returns. Sometimes powerless against first serve but 68 per cent success rate versus the second.

STAMINA: Considering his time out he kept going remarkably well. Some worrying body language at the start of the decider but gritted his teeth and did not get distracted by doubts over his body.
