‘IS denier’ has job protecting children

-

A LABOUR councillor who was suspended as a school governor after claiming there was ‘no proof’ IS exists has been appointed to a committee charged with helping to protect children from radicalisation.

Safia Akhtar Noor, 25, also urged people on social media to ‘grow up and stop pointing fingers’ after the Westminster terror attack which left five dead.

The married councillor was elected last month despite being suspended as a governor by Yew Tree Community School in Witton, Birmingham, last year for the statements which breached its code of conduct. She later resigned her role.

The law student has been appointed to the Children’s Social Care Overview and Scrutiny Committee, which is responsible for safeguarding policy development and review.

Tory councillor Alex Yip condemned Birmingham Council’s ‘shocking’ decision.

Mrs Akhtar did not return messages for comment yesterday but a Birmingham Labour group spokesman said she had issued an apology over her comments and condemned all terrorist acts.
