Man arrested after blast at Tube station
A MAN was arrested yesterday after an explosion in a Tube station on Tuesday, thought to have been caused by a power drill’s faulty battery.
Five people were injured in the crush at Southgate Underground station in north London as commuters fled for the exit after hearing a ‘massive bang’ and seeing a burst of flames at the top of an escalator.
British Transport Police arrested a 23-year-old man from nearby Enfield who is thought to have carried the faulty battery in a rucksack, which ignited as he was heading towards the exit. He was detained on suspicion of ‘doing an act likely to cause an explosion and endangering safety on the railway’, although police stressed that there was no suggestion it was a terrorist attack, as initially feared.
He has been released under investigation as inquiries continue.
