Liberals ... thousands of them! Fury at bid to ban ‘racist’ Zulu

- By Eleanor Harding

CAMPAIGNERS are trying to force a film festival to axe a charity screening of Zulu over claims it is racist.

They say the 196 epic, featuring Sir Michael Caine, is offensive and would stir up tensions between races.

The screening this Saturday aims to raise money for an Armed Forces charity.

But a letter signed by 28 residents in Folkestone, Kent, has demanded the film is banned because it has ‘racist overtones’. The movie recounts the Battle of Rorke’s Drift in 1879 when 150 British soldiers held off ,000 warrior tribesmen on the Natal border with Zululand

in South Africa. As the garrison is besieged, one character, Colour Sergeant Bourne, famously says: ‘The sentries report Zulus to the South West... thousands of them!’ The letter claimed the film was inaccurate and a screening ‘could have a negative effect’ on race relations in Folkestone.

But others ridiculed the move. One said: ‘The country is filled with spineless liberals who have nothing better to do than moan about a 5 -year-old film.’

Silver Screen Cinema yesterday insisted the film would go ahead as planned.
