Migrants be allowed to stay in Britain after Brexit?

-

nothing to the safety of British nationals abroad.

DES MORGAN, Swindon, Wilts. oFFERING settled status to 3.8 million EU citizens from this autumn is premature because the EU has not said what the status of British citizens on the Continent will be after Brexit. Is this another wasted bargaining chip? ROBERT J. EVANS,

Birmingham.

GIVEN that Brexit will — supposedly — bring about the total collapse of society, none of the migrants will want to stay. We might see waves of refugees heading across the Channel to France.

PETER DAVEY, Bournemouth. MoST migrants I meet are cheerful, helpful and hardworking. Just what we need. COLIN HAYWARD, Fareham, Hants.

OUR services are already under extreme pressure to cope, so will be swamped by 3.8 million migrants and their extended families. I thought Brexit meant our borders were to be reclaimed, not thrown open. Germany’s Angela Merkel let in a million refugees with disastrous consequences.

Mrs PAULINE PASMORE,

Shepperton, Middlesex. IT IS irresponsible that EU migrants will be granted settled status, which gives them full access to our welfare system for a mere £65. Families are expensive to the state and the taxpayer. Increased longevity is a growing burden. Migrants should be charged £1 million entry to the UK to be able to access our welfare system. That is far closer to what each will cost us in their lifetime.

PHILIP HODSON, Newmarket, Suffolk.

HOW will we police who is eligible to join their families for settled status in Britain? I cannot understand how relationships, particularly of ‘partners’, can be verified.

C. A. WITHEY, Tonyrefail, Mid Glamorgan.
