Rooney on verge of US move

- MATT LAWTON

WAYNE ROONEY is on the brink of joining DC United and is expected to head to the United States this week to complete his move. The 32-year-old has accepted there will be no role for him under new Everton manager Marco Silva and is preparing for a new life in Washington.

Sportsmail broke the sensational story that Rooney would head for the States last month. He will officially become DC United’s player on July 10, when the MLS transfer window opens. Majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri made the decision to allow Rooney — Everton’s leading scorer in 2017-18 — to leave at the end of last season. DC United want to make Rooney their pin-up player and are set to hand the ex-England captain a debut on July 14, when they start life at their new stadium. Rooney and his advisor Paul Stretford have been in talks with DC United for the past six weeks and have agreed a two-year deal worth in the region of £12.5million.
