Watch out, Mexico: Corbyn backs new president

- By John Stevens Policy Editor

JereMY Corbyn congratulated Mexico’s Left-wing president after he won the largest landslide in the country’s recent history.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador promised ‘profound change’ and to tackle the ‘evil’ of corruption. Mr Corbyn said the result was a ‘new beginning’ for the country.

however, opponents of Mr Lopez Obrador say he could turn Mexico into another Venico ezuela – where the authoritarian left-wing governments of hugo Chavez and his successor Nicolas Maduro wrecked the economy and fostered corruption and political violence. embarrassingly for Mr Corbyn, he had repeatedly endorsed Mr Chavez.

Last year the Labour leader went to Mex- to meet Mr Lopez Obrador and they discussed the ‘dream of realising a world government based on justice and fraternity’. he also introduced him at a London event.

÷Mr Corbyn’s trade union ally, Unite boss Len McCluskey, yesterday said he will never become prime minister unless he gets out of London and connects with traditional working-class supporters in industrial areas.
