I just hadn’t met the perfect person

-

WHEN Emily Grossman, 39, froze her eggs a year ago, it was not because of career ambition – it was simply because she wanted to be in a suitable relationship.

She believes egg-freezing is allowing her to ‘sidestep her biological clock’ and give her a chance of motherhood when she is ready.

The television presenter, who has a double first from Cambridge University, said she agrees with research that says relationships are the deciding factor rather than careers.

She added: ‘I think it’s more about waiting to meet the right person than delaying motherhood for career reasons, but both factors do play a role. Women these days are increasingly focusing on their careers, which is a great thing. But that does mean that some women perhaps don’t focus as early as they might have done on the kind of relationships that might lead to having children.

Miss Grossman said: ‘Whilst a part of me really wanted to have kids, another part of me didn’t feel ready. I was very happy as I was – my career was taking off, and I hadn’t met anyone I wanted to start a family with yet.’

She added: ‘If workplaces made it easier for women to have children and then go back to their careers, perhaps some women would not delay motherhood so that they find themselves in this position in their mid to late 30s.’
