DRIVER Joseph Duddington and fireman Thomas Bray stepped into 4468 Mallard on July 3, 1938, determined to break the steam locomotive speed record. The Mallard, built in Doncaster and designed by Nigel Gresley, was planned for sustained speeds of 90-100mph, but on this day, the mighty Mallard reached 126mph — a record that remains unbroken.
