Why are young people being targeted by internet gambling firms?
HAVING lost a son to addiction at the age of 28, Dominic Lawson’s superbly measured and sympathetic account of the heartache and desolation suffered by the parents who have lost a child through gambling addiction (Mail) spurred my anger at those responsible. The betting companies have clearly recognised this age group as psychologically most likely to become gambling addicts.
Culture Secretary Matt Hancock’s decision to delay for two years the new fixedodds betting terminal legislation (which would have cut the maximum bet on these machines from £100 to £2) has given the lobbyists time to work out a fudge. Worst of all, celebrities promote this awful business. Have they considered the phrase ‘Please promote responsibly’?
