Love game as Stan

- by LAURA LAMBERT

STAN WAWRINKA and Donna Vekic were the golden couple of Wimbledon yesterday, as the long-term lovers sprung the two biggest surprises of the day. One was battling a lack of match fitness and the other a lack of sleep after exuberant World Cup celebrations, but the pair (right) went home last night having enjoyed a ‘good day at the office’. Three-time Grand Slam champion Wawrinka, who is returning from a knee injury and was beaten by Andy Murray last week, produced touches of magic on Centre Court to beat sixth seed Grigor Dimitrov. The match had looked to be going the way most people had expected when Dimitrov won the first set 6-1 in 23 minutes, but Wawrinka fought back to triumph 1-6, 7-6, 7-6, 6-4. Earlier in the day, his girlfriend, 22-year-old Croat Vekic, had powered past fourth seed Sloane Stephens 6-1, 6-3.
