4 in 10 see the Chequers deal as betrayal

-

NEARLY four in ten voters believe Theresa May’s Chequers deal is a betrayal of the referendum, it was revealed last night.

Amid a hostile reaction from the Tory party faithful, an opinion poll found that 38 per cent of voters dismissed the Brexit compromise agreed by the Cabinet as a sell-out.

Just 35 per cent of voters believe it is the best deal Britain will get from the EU. The survey of 1,007 adults by Survation found that Jeremy Corbyn has now moved ahead of Mrs May, with support for Labour up two points in the past fortnight to 40 per cent. Meanwhile the Tories are down three points to 38.

However, 34 per cent still believe Mrs May should lead her party into the next election, due in 2022. Twenty-four per cent

said she should resign now, while 24 per cent said she should step down after we leave the EU next March.

A separate online poll of Tory members by the Conservative Home website revealed widespread unhappiness with the Chequers plan.

Some 61 per cent of the 1,225 respondents said that the proposals would be a bad deal for Britain, compared to 31 per cent who thought it would be good. A further 8 per cent were unsure.
