Veggie burger that ‘bleeds’ like real thing
A REVOLUTIONARY plant-based burger that ‘sizzles and bleeds’ is to be sold alongside real beefburgers in chilled cabinets at Tesco in a high street first.
The Beyond Burger sold out when first launched in the US and it is now coming to Britain where it will be offered to the growing number of people turning away from red meat.
The manufacturer, Beyond Meat, describes it as the ‘world’s first plantbased burger that looks, cooks, and tastes like a fresh beef burger’.
While it looks very similar to a raw beefburger it is made with Canadian yellow peas, coconut, potato and beetroot juice, which gives colour and moisture.
The burger is at the forefront of a food revolution as businesses try to find alternatives to real meat as consumers raise ethical and environmental concerns about livestock farming.
Normally, the vegetarian and vegan alternatives to meat are sold in specific aisles and freezer cabinets at supermarkets, however Beyond Meat insisted its burgers should be available fresh alongside real meat burgers. The burgers will go on sale in 350 Tesco outlets from next month and sell for £5.50 for a pack of two quarter pounders.
