THE drama series THE CITADEL (RADIO 4, 10.45AM, 7.45PM), adapted from A.J. Cronin’s 1937 novel, is set in the Twenties. Andrew Manson, a newly qualified doctor working in a Welsh mining district, tries to improve local health care, bringing him into contact with Philip Denny, a doctor with a drink problem. Cronin’s story of these men, with their profession­al and private dilemmas, played a big part in the founding of the NHS.

A YOUNG lawyer rents an apartment in an elegant Copenhagen mansion block. A pianist who keeps late hours lives in the flat above and plays Chopin in the middle of the night. EXTRA, 11AM, 9PM) has Tim McInnerny reading this Danish noir tale from Heidi Amsinck’s her recent anthology of short stories, Last Train To Helsingor.

Foolishly, they take her at her word, and celebratio­ns are very low-key, enabling Sandra to sulk to her heart’s content.
