MRS BLACkETT JEffRIES, vicechairman of the Marriage Committee of the British Social Hygiene Council, speaking in Westminster yesterday, stressed the importance of a medical examination before marriage, saying: ‘What is needed is an overhaul before an engagement is entered into. If it were possible, one would say it should take place before that pernicious occurrence, love-at-first-sight.’

THE long-heralded Mayfair parking-meter scheme comes into effect at 11am today [the first meters in Britain]. Motorists will have to pay sixpence an hour to park. If a street has no meters, it means no parking.
