Was David Davis right to resign over Mrs May’s Chequers Brexit plan?

-

FULL marks to David Davis for resigning as Brexit minister. He is standing by his principles and I applaud his actions. Theresa May has diluted what I and 17.4 million people voted for and are entitled to expect. She seems far more interested in satisfying Michel Barnier and the EU than in delivering a proper Brexit for the UK. DENNIS FISHER, Leeds. now the arrogant david davis has gone, let’s hope the hapless dr Liam Fox will follow. Mrs May should be allowed to appoint a businessman to negotiate Brexit because we don’t have anyone in Parliament capable of a job like this. KEN JACKSON, address supplied. CALAMITY May shows her tough side at Chequers by presenting the Cabinet with a ‘this is how it is going to be’ option. The result? David Davis resigns and the

whole process is in danger of collapse. Why didn’t she show this tough stance when she was snubbed in Brussels? Every time she has been challenged by Europe she has caved in, and come away with her tail between her legs and the prospect of an even worse deal for the UK. B. PINNINGTON, Liverpool. AT LAST someone with principles. I applaud David Davis for resigning. A very soft Brexit is not what we voted for. It just gives big business, politicians and the EU an easy way out. The Prime Minister should now resign, together with Michael Gove, who appears ready to back anyone who will guarantee his political future. We need a person with backbone, such as Jacob Rees-Mogg or Iain Duncan Smith, to stand up for the people of Britain. PETER STALLARD, Romford, Essex. WITH the resignation of David Davis, surely Theresa May’s days at No 10 are numbered. The country needs a cool head, someone whom the public can admire, emulate and look up to in these times of need. A strong leader who has proven managerial and diplomatic skills, who is media-savvy and sartorially elegant. Gareth Southgate gets my vote! MICHAEL BROWN, Hexham, Northumberland. NIGEL FARAGE would have been the best person to replace David Davis as Brexit Secretary. He got the whole thing going, so no one is better to finish the job. He would have wrapped it up in a few weeks if meddling, muddling May had kept out of it. DOUGLAS HARRISON, London W5. DAVID DAVIS, the Brexit bulldog, resigns: the BBC’s Dead Ringers won’t be the same! PETE CROSS, Waterlooville, Hants.
