No-stress policing
I Was surprised to read about the high levels of police sickness due to stress (Mail).
As a teenage recruit in the warrington Police in the sixties, I was sent on foot patrol by myself.
we did not have radios or mobile phones, so if there was an incident, I had to rely on a member of the public or knock on doors to ask to phone for assistance or an ambulance.
I remember accompanying bodies to the police morgue. All this could be traumatic, but on my way home after a shift, I would drive under a bridge and mentally draw a curtain
behind me in order to separate work from the rest of my life. Stress had not been invented back then! BRIAN SMITH, Warrington, Lancs.
