Breakthrough for faster microchips

-

MICROCHIP pioneer IQE has received the first order for a breakthrough technology used to make components for internet networks.

The Cardiff-based firm said its method to make material used in processors had been backed by a major supplier.

It means the firm can take a bigger role in the production of components for lasers used in fibre-optic cable networks and data centres.

IQE said its technology – known as nanoimprint lithography – allowed it to etch complex designs, smaller than one millionth of a meter, on to microchip materials such as silicon and glass.

It uses a printing process instead of relying on expensive and slower electron beams. It could also have applications in other fields, such as 3D imaging, air quality monitoring, chemical weapons detection, breath tests and blood monitoring.

The company has already received an order worth £250,000 that would use the technology.
