Train drivers: We’re not working on Cup final day

- By James Salmon Transport Editor

RAIL bosses have warned passengers they face travel chaos on Sunday because of a shortage of train drivers caused by the World Cup.

Executives at Govia Thameslink Railway told MPs during a meeting in Parliament that drivers have refused to work on Sunday because they do not want to miss the tournament final – especially with England only one win away from being in it before last night’s loss to Croatia.

Govia operates the troubled Thameslink and Southern routes, as well as Great Northern and Gatwick Express.

Nick Brown, Govia’s chief operating officer, told MPs yesterday morning that drivers had refused to put themselves forward for work on Sunday.

The rail operator relies heavily on drivers volunteering to work on rest days to ensure they have enough to provide a full service. A shortage of drivers will lead to cancellations and delays on Sunday – and could even force passengers to miss the big game.

Tory MP Grant Shapps said: ‘Our railways must be the only public service where it is voluntary whether to turn up for work on a Sunday.

‘Millions of commuters will be relying on trains this Sunday to gather with friends to watch the World Cup final.

‘They should not be leaving it to chance as to whether a train driver turns up.’
