Third Briton plunges to his death at the same Magaluf hotel

- Mail Foreign Service

A THIRD Briton has died after falling from what has been dubbed a ‘walkway of death’ in a Magaluf hotel, it has emerged.

Thomas Channon, 18, plunged 70ft from a balcony at the Eden Roc complex last week, raising questions about how three youngsters could lose their lives in the same place since April.

Last month, Tom Hughes, 20, of Wrexham, died after jumping over a wall, unaware of the drop.

And in April, natalie Cormack, 19, from West Kilbridge in north Ayrshire, plunged to her death after trying to climb into her seventh- floor apartment over the balcony.

Mr Channon, who was celebrating the end of his A-levels, is thought to have became separated from friends after a night out in the Majorcan resort.

As he tried to find his way back to the Hotel Florida at 4am, he is thought to have stumbled over a wall along a walkway that connects two buildings. His body was found later by a gardener.

His parents are said to have flown out to the island.

Critics say the walls along the walkway are far too low, making it too easy for people to stumble over it in the dark.

In Roose, South Wales, where he lived with his mother Ceri, 49, a midwife, and his father John, 67, a company director, neighbours told of their shock.

One said: ‘They are such a lovely family and always very friendly. Thomas and his brother are lovely boys and always very polite. It is just so sad.’

One parent of a friend from Mr Channon’s group in Spain, who asked not to be named, said: ‘We went to where Thomas fell and the wall is way too low. It’s about knee-height.

‘When you look at it there are loads of trees and bushes beyond the wall which gives the impression there’s a garden, but there’s actually a 70ft drop.

‘Something has to happen now. It shouldn’t take all these kids dying to make sure proper precautions are in place.

‘Three kids dying here this year is just unbelievable. We’re furious.’ British diplomats were called to a meeting this weekend with local leaders to prevent further falls at the resort town, which has become famous for its raucous nightlife.

A spokesman for Calvia Council, which covers the Magaluf area, said: ‘Given the concern about the number of people killed or injured in falls in the last few weeks, principally in the Punta Ballena area, the council has called a meeting to analyse the problem and see what more can be done.’
