Fingertip scanner to protect against stroke
A New device that detects an abnormal heart rhythm by scanning a patient’s fingertip could be used to prevent strokes.
The Melys Atrial Fibrillation Monitor is designed to be used by patients at home and gives simple results. it monitors atrial fibrillation ( AF), where abnormal electrical activity means the heart beats too fast. AF causes 16,000 strokes a year.
The device, which is being reviewed by the european regulator, has a clip that you attach to your finger. This clip contains a sensor, which records the pulse pattern for 15 seconds.
A score is then displayed, showing the likelihood of AF and whether the patient needs to see their doctor.
