Pill could mean end of daily insulin jabs
A pill could soon banish the need for daily insulin jabs in people with type 1 diabetes. insulin, which is produced by the pancreas, helps cells absorb sugar.
in type 1 diabetes, the pancreas produces little or no insulin and patients need to inject themselves several times a day.
pills have been a challenge to develop because insulin is a protein, so it would be broken down in the stomach before reaching the bloodstream.
But now U.S. researchers have developed a form of insulin inside a capsule which can survive the acidic environment of the stomach, dissolving in the intestine where it is needed, reports the journal proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
