BESIDE THE SEASIDE Beach Live: Jurassic Coast Revealed, 8pm, BBC4

FIRST of a three-night revel in the joys of Dorset’s beaches, hosted by Dan Snow, with insight from Niall Strawson and Lucy Cooke. Expect to learn the royal origin of beach huts, what molluscs are doing for racehorses, and whether crabs prefer bacon or mackerel.

FILM BUFF Mark Kermode’s Secrets Of Cinema, 9pm, BBC4

THE critic (pictured) presents a jaunty guide to movie genres in his new series, starting with romcoms. One of his touchstone­s is the mermaid romance Splash (‘I must have seen this film a hundred times’), and he talks about his subject with such passion and insight that it’s a pleasure to watch.

DOCTOR DOWN UNDER Harrow, 9pm, Alibi i

THIS new Australian drama lurches intriguing­ly between familiar and fresh. Ioan Gruffudd (pictured) plays a brilliant, workaholic pathologis­t (familiar) who’s Welsh and works in Brisbane (fresh); he has a strained relationsh­ip with his daughter (familiar), and loves westerns (fresh) — and he lives on a boat, just like Quincy.

MEDIEVAL SAGA Knightfall, 9pm, History

THE Knights Templar act like a kind of medieval UN in this new historical drama, deciding where they can justly intervene in a divided Europe while looking for opportunit­ies to retake the Holy Land. It opens with a Game Of Thrones-style siege showdown, and features Ed Stoppard as King Philip IV of France.

TANGLED LIVES The Affair, 9pm, Sky Atlantic

WE’RE back to Alison and Cole tonight, and their story really takes off in the second half with a surprising link between their lives. To start, Alison is at a conference with Ben, diving into her troubled past. She has a lot to work through before becoming a therapist.

FREEVIEW MOVIE Move Over, Darling, 10pm, BBC4

DORIS DAY stars in this romcom as the wife lost at sea who is horrified to return after five years to find that her husband, Nick (James Garner, pictured below with Day), has remarried. And then, Nick is put out when he learns that she has been stranded on a desert island all that time with Chuck Connors’s hunk.

HIDDEN BOUNTY Cooper’s Treasure, 10pm, Discovery

THE premise of this treasurehu­nting reality series is well above average: Darrell Miklos follows the trail laid down by astronaut Gordon Cooper, who took pictures of shipwrecks from space in 1963. At the start of this new run, he has just eight weeks to find riches — or ruin.
