KNACKERED MOTHERS’ WINE CLUB

- BY HELEN McGINN

BARGAIN OF THE WEEK Hattingley Valley Brut NV, £22.50, Waitrose

ONE of the stars on the English sparkling wine scene, this Hampshire vineyard produces some of the smartest wines around. Made the same way as Champagne and using the same grape varieties, some of the wine is fermented in oak barrels, giving it a lovely richness. Dazzling.

WHITE WINE Rainha do Mar Fernao Pires 2017, £8.29, Laithwaites

THIS crisp white is a real gem. Made from the indigenous Fernão Pires grape, it’s tropical with gorgeous star fruit and gentle guava flavours. If you’re buying a mixed case, stick a bottle of this in and you’ll get it for just £7.46.

FOOD PAIRING: Calamari.

ROSÉ Tesco Finest Sancerre Rosé 2016, £11, Tesco

THIS cool region in Northern France’s Loire Valley is more famous for its flinty (and often pretty expensive) whites made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape. But Sancerre does a great line in rosé wines, too. Made from the Pinot Noir grape, this one has subtle red cherry flavours.

FOOD PAIRING: Fresh crab.

RED WINE Beaujolais 2017, £9, M&S

AS SUMMER-FRIENDLY wines go, this is hard to beat, with flavours of just-crushed raspberries and black pepper giving it a light, spicy kick. Made from Gamay, the grapes are fermented as whole bunches, giving lots of texture but without heavy tannins. Soft, supple, seriously moreish.

FOOD PAIRING: Posh hot dogs.
