Moped thug who killed for Rolex gets 35 years

- By Chris Greenwood Chief Crime Correspondent

A SMIRKING moped killer who stabbed a stranger to death for his £7,000 Rolex was jailed for at least 35 years yesterday.

Jordan Bailey-Mascoll, 26, was one of two men who murdered Danny Pearce, 31, in front of his girlfriend as they left a jazz club.

The balaclava- clad pair, the second of whom has never been identified, ruthlessly targeted their victim as they stalked south-east London.

The attack was the latest in Bailey-Mascoll’s appalling criminal career, which has blighted the capital. Sentencing him at Woolwich Crown Court, Judge Christo-

‘Feared it was a terrorist attack’

pher Kinch said friends of the victim were totally unprepared for the ‘savagery’ they witnessed. Describing the attack as ‘horrifying, brutalised, and sustained’, he described how Mr Pearce fought back before being chased down and attacked with hunting knives.

Sentencing him to life, he said: ‘You went out with another man looking for someone to rob. Your intended targets were people sporting high-value watches. The more expensive the better. The two of you went armed with a handgun and knives. You went on a motor-scooter scouring the streets of London looking for a victim.’

Bailey-Mascoll, whose criminal record dates back to his teens, smirked as he was led to the cells. Mr Pearce was killed in July last year in an attack so ferocious,

bystanders feared it was a terrorist incident. CCTV footage caught Bailey-Mascoll and his accomplice picking out their target in Greenwich, south-east London.

The victim’s group was then confronted by the two men who demanded Mr Pearce’s distinctive watch, chasing, stabbing and shooting at him when he refused.

Police identified Bailey-Mascoll by linking him to a blue Adidas tracksuit worn by one of the men with the moped at a petrol station ten minutes earlier. A quick-thinking passer-by noted down part of its licence plate and it was linked to a string of similar robberies. His DNA was found on the moped and he had a spare set of keys.

In a heartfelt statement, the victim’s sister Amanda Pearce said: ‘We did not get to say goodbye, but you did not go alone because part of us went with you.’ After the case, the victim’s family appealed for help catching the second killer known only as ‘Ghost’.

Bailey-Mascoll, who grew up in Sydenham, south east London, was convicted of murder, possession of a firearm, possession of an imitation firearm and robbery.

He has been in and out of court for burglary, possessing cannabis, theft from a motor vehicle and shoplifting while still a juvenile.
