£9.50 vegan avocado ice cream, anyone?

- By Jenny Coad

We’re all feeling the heat and, in these scorching temperatures, it’s tempting to dive into a tub of icecream. Now you can cool down the modern, millennial way with a 100 per cent plant based, gluten-free, vegan, avocado ice-cream.

But you won’t get much change from a tenner – they’re £9.50 a pop.

The so- called Avo- lato is being sold by luxury gelato company Snowflake, which has outposts in London, Bicester Village and Barcelona. The treat looks like avocado, is 60 per cent avocado, and even comes in an avocado skin. And, despite the price tag, it’s flying off the shelves.

When I visited their South Kensington shop they’d just taken delivery of a fresh batch. Yesterday they sold 200 Avo-latos in two and half hours, the nice chap behind the counter tells me.

Tourists love them, apparently. So what’s it like? Creamy. Much creamier than you might expect from a vegan ice-cream. The texture is beautifully smooth and it doesn’t seem to melt as swiftly as your standard Mr Whippy. And taste? Well… for £9.50, it’s a bit of a disappointment. Avocado is not the most exciting of fruits and the prevailing flavour is sweet with a dash of citrus thanks to the squeeze of lemon they add to the mixture.

The best bit is the stone, which is actually a peanut butter flavoured ice-cream made using soya milk, flaxseed, almond, brazil nuts and walnut. It has a nice crunchy texture, too.

But, while my wallet might have taken a knock, my waistline won’t. It’s supposedly healthier and – thanks to the nuts – protein rich, too. It is also eco-friendly, served in a biodegradable bamboo boat.
