IF you have been searching for the perfect backdrop to declare your undying love, you could do far worse than book a trip to the Isle of Skye.

Surrounded by mountains and glimmering waterfalls, the Scottish island’s Fairy Pools have been named the most romantic spot in Britain.

This is according to Mills & Boon, whose authority rests on more than a century of publishing romance fiction. The company has compiled a list of the UK’s 20 most romantic places, with the Lake District village of Grasmere coming second.

The Georgian grandeur of Bath – the only entire city in the country to achieve Unesco World Heritage status – came third in the survey of 2,000 people.

Other potential proposal spots include Durdle Door – a stunning natural limestone arch on the Dorset coast – in fourth and Tresco, the second largest of the Isles of Scilly, in fifth. The 20 winners were picked from a list drawn up by a panel of travel experts.

To celebrate the UK’s top ten most love inducing places, Mills & Boon has commissioned a short story set in each.

The titles include A Scandalous Liaison on Skye by Marguerite Kaye and A Dorset Wedding to Remember by Ellie Darkins. Waterside locations appear to be a favourite among romance-seeking Britons, with most of the top ten close to the sea, rivers, lakes or waterfalls.

The survey also revealed that the overwhelming majority of couples believe a summer holiday is the best way to spend time together. And the single most important factor in choosing an intimate location was beautiful views, with 69 per cent of Britons ranking this as the top priority.

Sadly for anyone wanting a romantic getaway on the cheap, more than half said luxury accommodation was essential.

Just under 50 per cent considered a warm climate an important factor, while only a third were interested in good walks.

Earlier this year Mills & Boon created a guide to making your beloved’s heart melt in the digital age. The publisher advised couples to limit how long they spend on their mobiles when together, to tidy their rooms before making a video call and to avoid asking a potential date out by email.
