WILL THEY MAKE YOUR CHILD BRAINY?
OMEGA-3 fatty acids are thought to be particularly important during childhood. An analysis of randomised controlled trials published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in 2011 showed that just three to four months of supplementation with omega 3s could reduce ADHD symptoms, such as hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention, in children with behaviour and learning difficulties.
More recently, research by the University of Oxford also found that DHA supplements improved the reading progress of healthy but underperforming primary-aged children at mainstream schools. However there is no evidence that omega-3 supplements improve mental ability in well-performing kids.
