Today’spoem

-

I’d been asked to write some poems for this quarterly magazine. ‘No problem there,’ I thought, ‘there’ll be ages in between.’ So, it came as quite a shock today when I realised — and how If I was going to make the deadline, I had to write one now. I quickly had my breakfast and put all the things away, Then I glanced out of the window, it was a perfect washing day. I quickly got some washing on, the machine was in a spin, When I saw the smeary windows, you really just can’t win. So out I went with cloth in hand to get them really clean, I took a look — ‘Well done,’ I thought, ‘they’re the best they’ve ever been.’ With both jobs done and feeling pleased, it was time to take a break. A cup of coffee would go down well, and perhaps a slice of cake! The coffee was most welcome, and the cake was really fine, The only thing for me to do was to hang the washing on the line. So out I went once more, yes spring was almost here, ‘I’ll feed the birds,’ I thought, ‘they need food this time of year.’ I went back to the kitchen, and drank another cuppa, ‘And now I’ve finished that,’ I thought, ‘I’ll make something for supper. ‘I could make a warming casserole or even a tasty roast.’ That took longer than I thought and then I heard the post. The time was quickly passing, I saw the washing on the line. ‘I’ll just nip outside and get it in, then things will be just fine.’ As I sat down in the evening, my thoughts began to stray ‘I didn’t write that poem,’ I thought. ‘Oh well, tomorrow’s another day.’ P.
