THE ART OF CRAFT
Handmade, 7.30pm, BBC4 ALTHOUGH at times it resembles a tedious art installation, BBC4’s experiment in ‘slow TV’ is a noble attempt to depict traditional British craftsmanship. There is no narration or music, just artfully framed footage of patient glassmakers at work — and the effect is strangely soothing. ON-DEMAND MOVIE Ready Player One, BT TV/ Sky Store/Virgin Movies STEVEN SPIELBERG brings this carnival of sci-fi references to the big screen. It’s a visual feast, built around a virtual reality contest for untold riches on a polarised Earth. One admirable story of success is Sonia, who spent six years on the streets and now wants to help others to find a path back to a normal life.
EDGY DRAMA
Better Call Saul, Netflix THIS artful Breaking Bad spin-off, following the origins of crooked lawyer Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk, pictured), stood on its own two feet from the start. This new series is even stronger and finds Saul reeling from a great loss. A new episode arrives every Tuesday. THE SILVER SCREEN Mark Kermode’s Secrets Of Cinema, 9pm, BBC4 THE critic explores how sci-fi has pushed the limits of film-making, and has plenty of great clips to sharply illustrate his points. Kermode uses his encyclopaedic knowledge of film history to draw a line from Hitchcock to time-travelling thriller Twelve Monkeys, which follows at 10pm. FORENSICS DRAMA Harrow, 9pm, Alibi THE most fascinating element of this new episode isn’t the case — which is interesting, if overcomplicated — it’s the scenes between Harrow (Ioan Gruffudd) and Dass. They end up on a double date with Harrow’s ex-wife, and the women compare notes in front
of him, partly to wind him up.
