Harvest home

-

THE President of the National Farmers’ Union has called on the Government to do everything it can to increase the production of homegrown food (Mail).

Last year, I saw a large number of site preparation vehicles assembled alongside a field of ripe cereal. As the last of the crop was harvested, the vehicles moved in.

There is now a large housing development on a field that produced food for a thousand years. Perhaps the NFU President could have a word with get-rich-quick farmers.

K. J. HUGHES, Furneux Pelham, Herts.

BY THE NFU’s own admission, 40 years of the Common Agricultural Policy has seen our food production decline from 75 per cent to 60 per cent of national needs.

As a farmer, I believe we have the opportunity to design a farm policy that addresses production, competitiveness and efficiency.

It would be good to see a big idea from the NFU rather than alarm.

D. HARVEY, Derby. with vegetables struggling to grow in drought- stricken fields and animals unable to graze in dried-up pastures, farmers have got a lot more to worry about than Brexit.

we need to value our food resources by planning production and demand, wasting less and educating consumers. with climate change, our seasons will become more volatile, so we need to be more resilient.

It is an opportunity to understand where food comes from and the importance of our countryside. STUART YARWOOD, Congleton, Cheshire.
