Should Amazon be made to pay more tax?

-

AMAZON has seen sales in Britain soar to £2 billion yet pays just £4.5 million in corporation tax (Mail). While the tax burden is destroying independent High Street businesses, Amazon has shamelessly found ingenious ways of avoiding paying its fair share. CHAKA ARTWELL, Oxford.

MULTI-NATIONAL companies don’t set tax, the HMRC does. if we demand little, that is what we will get. As well as corporation tax, how about a country tax for global businesses on every pound they turn over in Britain? Yes, prices would increase for consumers, but think of the revenue — it would probably finance the NHS. GERARD KELLEY, Wigan.

SURELY the blame must be laid at the door of those who draw up the tax regulations. Amazon is not breaking any rules by its actions to mitigate its tax liabilities. We all would do the same, given the opportunity to do so legally. It is incumbent on HMRC not to leave loopholes that can be exploited. DAVID JACKSON, Bushey, Herts.

AFTER all this criticism of Amazon, maybe we should be asking why it’s so successful. The prices are competitive and the service is second to none. if other businesses tried to compete instead of complaining, the public and the High Street would be the winners. TONY CARRUTHERS, Amble,

AMAZON has been criticised yet again for not paying enough tax. Hands up anyone who volunteers to pay more tax than they have to. HUGH SAWYER, Basingstoke, Hants.
