£100m drive to end misery of rough sleeping

-

A PLAN to spend £100million to end rough sleeping by 2027 will be unveiled today.

The strategy, to be announced by Housing Secretary James Brokenshire, will offer help to those with mental health and addiction problems.

There will also be targeted support to get rough sleepers off the streets and into longterm accommodation.

Mr Brokenshire acknowledged that efforts to tackle homelessness had ‘not been good enough’ and said he wanted to see quick progress in reducing the estimated 4,751 people sleeping rough on any given night in England.

He told the Sunday Times the situation was not consistent with ‘the type of country, the type of society that I profoundly believe we are’.

Around £30million will be spent on mental health and treatment for substance misuse. Swifter support will be offered to those in crisis to stop them sleeping on the streets.
