NASSER HUSSAIN’S 2nd TEST RATINGS

ALASTAIR COOK 5

LOOKED very balanced at the crease and got a start but when Ishant Sharma went round the wicket he got him with a pretty good delivery. Touch wood his catching looked a bit more secure.

KEATON JENNINGS 4

PLAYED round a very full delivery when he should have been looking to hit it a lot straighter. Odd review that seemed to come from Cook. Will need a score at Trent Bridge for his own peace of mind as much as anything but did take one very good slip catch on the fourth day.

JOE ROOT 6

GETS his mark mainly for his captaincy which again was very good. He appears to have got Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad to bowl the ball fuller, he brought in a short leg for Virat Kohli and he got Jonny Bairstow up to the stumps. Thinking and learning as a leader. Most uncomfortable I’ve seen him look with the bat in an England shirt but you have days like that.

OLLIE POPE 6.5

DID well on debut. Not an easy situation to go in on but looked calm and positive at the crease. Pope (right) has got a bit of Joe Root about him but dips a bit low which he might need to keep an eye on. Nice catch to get Kohli and kept calm for his run out.

JONNY BAIRSTOW 9

THE first 20 or 30 runs were hard work but if you fight and show a bit of grit you can cash in when it gets easier. Great balance between attack and defence and I like the fact that he went after Ravi Ashwin. Not an easy place to keep with the wobble and it was staying low at times from the Nursery End too so he kept very well. A very good game.

JOS BUTTLER 4

DROPPED a couple of catches in the first innings but made up for them both immediately afterwards, which shows his mental resilience. Looked to be positive but only thing I’d say is be careful not to become a one-trick pony, getting outside off-stump and getting down the pitch. Mohammed Shami saw him coming, bowled it full and got him out lbw.

CHRIS WOAKES 9.5

BOWLED brilliantly in the first innings and could have had more wickets. Loves Lord’s and got late movement from the Nursery End, using the crease very well. Batted like a top-order batsman at a difficult time in a difficult situation. Perfect counterattack and another right-hander to go after Ashwin.

SAM CURRAN 8

CONTINUES to impress. Got the tempo right with his batting when he needed to get on with it on the fourth day and Curran (right) bowled a very full length that saw him go past the edge on a number of occasions.

ADIL RASHID 6

DIDN’T bat and didn’t bowl, so thanks for coming. Didn’t get the opportunity to impress so don’t want to mark him too low. He just wasn’t needed because of the excellence of the seamers. It wasn’t his fault.

STUART BROAD 8

TYPICAL Broad. He can go quiet like he was to a degree in the first innings but suddenly a change of ends to the Pavilion which he probably prefers and off he went. Such a freakish bowler when his legs start pumping. He’s bowling a lot fuller and moving it. Absolute beaut to get Cheteshwar Pujara out.

JIMMY ANDERSON 9.5

ALL RIGHT, the conditions were perfect for him in the first innings but you still have to make the most of them. He set the tone for the whole Test when he got Murali Vijay with the fifth ball of the match and the way he moves from out to inswing is a craftsman at work. Joy to watch him.
