WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

-

AS WITH any eye surgery, there’s a risk of bleeding and infection.

THE success of this surgery depends on the way the patient scars — scar tissue can obstruct the flow of fluid out of the eye.

PATIENTS can go through airport security, but after an MRI scan would need to see their specialist team, as the magnetic effect could alter the implant device.

‘THIS is a promising innovation and addresses the limitations when using other glaucoma drainage devices,’ says Samer Hamada, a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, West Sussex, and the Eye Clinic London.

‘The ability to adjust the flow of eye fluids could revolutionise surgery for glaucoma. It seems a very safe procedure because it reduces the risk of under or over drainage and so there’s less need to operate on the patient again.’
