IN THE Middle Ages, the tusks of narwhals, when found washed up by the sea, were thought to be the horns of unicorns. Narwhals are members of the whale family, and the long canine tooth on the top of their heads was considered to have all kinds of magical qualities. Narwhals are found in the Arctic and, if they steer clear of orcas and avoid getting trapped under ice, can live for 50 years or so. For NATURAL HISTORIES (RADIO 4, 11AM) Brett Westwood looks at the facts and the legends connected to these strange creatures.

TARA AND GEORGE (RADIO 4, 3PM) are just two of the thousands of people sleeping rough on the streets of London. They spend much of their time in Spitalfields, getting some support from local shelters and charities, but their life is an unending

struggle. They are in their late 40s, and find, as they get older and frailer, that the pavements feel harder, and the winters longer and colder. This six-part series follows the two of them as they do what they can to support each other in a chaotic and indifferent world.

SUPER charming Will rounds off his series of modern R&B music WILL YOUNG ESSENTIAL R&B (RADIO 2, 9PM) with tracks from Erykah Badu (pictured), Prince, Whitney Houston, Massive Attack, En Vogue, Soul II Soul and the Fugees.
