Millionaire who owns Maggie’s dresses
SIR Peter Wood owns one of the world’s largest collections of Margaret Thatcher’s clothes – including the suits she wore to meet Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev. Knighted in 2016 for services to industry and philanthropy, he bought the collection at auction in 2015 to preserve as much of her wardrobe as possible for posterity. ‘I am a great fan of Margaret Thatcher,’ he said. ‘She had a vision and a conviction. I only met her a couple of times, briefly, and I just thanked her for doing wonderful things to make people like me inspired to work.’ Wood ( picturedwithhispartnerJacqueline has attracted criticism over his pay. After he collected £18m from Direct Line in 1993, then shadow trade secretary Robin Cook labelled his earnings ‘obscene’. Dubbed Britain’s Mr Insurance, Wood has since branched out to become a major investor in property.
