Escape to the country

JACOB Rees-Mogg’s call for up to 50 homes to be built in every village to ease the housing shortage is not as sensationalist as you might think.

Rural communities are suffering from a lack of suitable housing, with families and young people being priced out, and schools and shops being forced to close.

Community land trusts (CLTs) are a way to build genuinely affordable housing. More than 800 CLT homes have been built in the past decade, many in villages and some in areas of outstanding natural beauty.

TOM CHANCE, National CLT Network, London SE1.

WHAT is the point of building 50 new houses in every village when there won’t be new GP surgeries, dentists and schools, or an improvement to sewerage and the water supply — not to mention rural roads being unable to cope with the extra traffic?

W. ABBOTT, Wem, Shropshire.
