20 still missing after Genoa bridge disaster
UP TO 20 people are still believed missing as search efforts continue through the rubble of the collapsed bridge in Genoa.
As emergency services scour the wreckage, Italy’s controversial interior minister Matteo Salvini blamed the disaster on European Union budget restraints. At least 38 people were killed in the disaster on Tuesday. However, Christian Spahr, an EU spokesman, insisted that Italy was to receive ‘around 2.5billion euros’ for infrastructure projects, including bridges and roads. He said that Italy had been responsible for budgetary gaps in relation to the bridge’s upkeep. The comments came as Genoa’s chief prosecutor Francesco Cozzi said there could be as many as 20 people still missing.
A state funeral for the victims of the disaster will take place tomorrow at 11am presided over by the city’s archbishop.
