WHAT’S HOT WHAT’S NOT

OLLIE WATKINS

THE 22-year-old scored the goal of the day across all four divisions as Brentford drew at Stoke City. A 13-pass move started in Brentford’s own half ended with Watkins thumping a low first-time shot past Jack Butland from 20 yards. A goal to puncture the myth that you can’t play good football in the Championship, it’s worth a look on the internet.

RICHARLISON

EVERTON’S new signing scored twice as Marco Silva’s team drew at Wolves only for travelling fan Neil Harrison to dislocate his elbow in the celebrations. Neil was surprised when an appeal on social media for Richarlison to sign his plaster cast was followed by an invitation to meet the Brazilian at training. Sometimes, the little things mean the most.

BROOKS KOEPKA

A BRILLIANT final day at the USPGA brought the American his third major but someday soon American golf is going to have to get over its Tiger Woods obsession. Woods was brilliant on Sunday but the muted applause that greeted Koepka’s win on the 18th green was sad. The 28-year-old has a US stamp on his passport, too, you know.

CHARLIE ADAM

THE midfielder can play, which makes Stoke’s decision to tell him he can leave seem strange. But Adam has been talking freely — and not always glowingly — on Radio 5 Live about life at the club for so long it seems the hierarchy in the Potteries have finally tuned in. Adam will be a fine pundit one day but has learned it’s not always wise to try to overlap one job with another.

ANDREW ‘BEEF’ JOHNSTON THE English golfer breezed on to the scene two summers ago after winning his first tour title in Spain but we wondered whether he really had the game to go with the engaging personality. Beef is still around and his best years should lie ahead but his results have been modest in a Ryder Cup year and the 29-year-old currently sits at 70th in the European standings. SAM ALLARDYCE

THE former England manager was hammered for saying it was ‘utter rubbish’ for teams to ‘play out from the back’. But what Allardyce actually said — in reference to Arsenal — was it was wrong to play like that ‘all of the time’. Those are the key words, the words that turn a piece of seemingly crass analysis into something that was actually absolutely right.
