Maguire has what it takes to be the No 1

Evans: He’s good enough for United... and can shut Pep up

- MIKE KEEGAN at the King Power Stadium

His stunning World Cup for England won him new admirers across the globe and now the growing Harry Maguire fan club has a new member — Leicester debut-maker Jonny Evans.

The former Manchester United man made his Foxes bow alongside Maguire in their 2-0 victory over Premier League new boys Wolves on a frantic afternoon which saw Jamie Vardy sent off for a reckless second-half tackle.

Evans’s ex-employers had been linked with a £65million move for his new team- mate and the Northern ireland defender believes United’s loss is Leicester’s gain.

‘He’s got the lot,’ said Evans. ‘Physically he’s got it and he’s good with the ball. His technique is fantastic and i think he proved that throughout the World Cup.

‘if he went to any top club he would fit in no problem. There’s no reason why he couldn’t play for United. He’s got the ability to.’

in the recently released documentary on Manchester City’s title victory, Pep Guardiola highlighted Maguire as a weak link who lacked pace. But Evans begs to differ.

‘He has great ability and he’s very composed,’ he said. ‘He’s obviously an outstanding player.’

Wolves bossed the opening exchanges here — hitting the woodwork twice. Full back Matt Doherty also saw his close-range shot blocked before Claude Puel’s men came to life. The hosts took the lead when Marc Albrighton’s cross deflected off the head of Conor Coady and an unwitting Doherty powered a headed past his own keeper. And on the stroke of half-time there was more misfortune when Leicester new boy James Maddison added a second with a deflected drive.

Wolves were given a glimmer of hope when Vardy won a 50/50 but then carelessly cannoned into Doherty and was sent off. The irishman is set to make a quick recovery but admitted things could have been serious, saying: ‘i’m fine, i’ve just got some stud marks. i think if my leg was planted it would’ve been worse. To be fair, he (Vardy) asked if everything was all right. i said there’s no hard feelings.’
