Why blueberries make you smarter
BlueBerries boost brain function by improving blood flow in the brain, suggest researchers running a new trial on the fruit.
They are rich in anthocyanins, compounds linked to improvements in the lining of blood vessels. Now researchers at King’s College london and the university of reading are carrying out the first trial to see whether the berries can increase blood flow to the brain, thereby improving mental performance.
About 100 people, aged eight to 80, will take part — their blood flow will be measured, and two hours after consuming wild blueberry powder or a placebo, they will undergo cognitive tests. Previous research has shown improvements in memory within two to five hours of eating blueberries.
