WHY I’M WORRIED ABOUT . . .

-

COSTLY new drugs. Yesterday it was reported that CAR-T therapies — new treatments which help the immune system fight off certain cancers — have been putting patients with leukaemia and lymphoma, who’d been told they had only months to live, into remission.

Yet a one-off treatment costs £375,000 and there is the cost of chemotherapy and hospital care on top. On that basis, it seems highly unlikely that the NHS will be able to offer it.

I know developing a drug is expensive, but we must hope a way forward can be found. To have such life-saving treatments priced beyond the NHS’s reach would be tragic.
