I want him to succeed and turn it around. I cannot remember a poorer United performance than the defeat at Brighton but there were signs afterwards that Mourinho is prepared to change his leadership style.

He resisted the opportunity to come for his players, saying instead he would not comment negatively about them.

Managers have the right to criticise players, but when they do it publicly, it is like a double humiliation. Mourinho’s stars look devoid of confidence.

Mourinho is a proud man. He will not want the damage to his reputation another third- season disaster would bring. It is why he has taken this first step to rebuild bridges.

We are only two games into the season. If Jose can make his players feel special, then he will get special performances.
